What to Wear to a Spring or Summer Wedding
Australian wedding season runs from September to March, and much of it happens outdoors. Lighter fabrics — tulle, chiffon, crepe and fluid satin — stay comfortable through a ceremony in the sun and an afternoon of photos. Midi and knee-length dresses are the most practical choice for gardens and lawns, where a long hem picks up grass and a stiletto sinks; a block heel or wedge solves the second problem.
For an evening reception after a daytime ceremony, a floor-length A-line in a soft colour carries through both. Bring a light wrap or a sleeved style for spring evenings, which can turn cool quickly after sunset.
Colour and Print for a Daytime Wedding
Daylight suits clear colour. Blush, lilac, powder blue, mint and sage are the classic spring palette; coral, yellow, cobalt and hot pink feel more like summer. Floral and printed dresses are made for garden weddings — they read as daytime and photograph well against greenery.
The one rule that never changes: avoid white, ivory and very pale champagne, which can read as bridal in photos. If a print sits on a white base, make sure the colour in it is strong enough to be seen from across the room. For the full range, including darker evening styles, see all wedding guest dresses.
Garden Party, Engagement and Bridal Shower Dresses
The same dresses work for the rest of the warm-weather calendar: garden parties, engagement parties, bridal showers, christenings and long lunches. A printed wrap midi or a pastel cocktail dress can be dressed up with heels and a clutch, or down with flat sandals. For spring race days, see our races and Melbourne Cup edit; for the mother of the bride, the mother of the bride collection has more sleeved and longer styles.
